Developer Collaboration

Use Case

Uniting a global workforce

CHALLENGE

Juniper wanted to be able to operate around the clock with no downtime and no disruption. It wanted its offices in Westford, MA, and Bangalore, India to all have the same LAN-speed performance, data access, and availability to ensure their 3,000 developers could collaborate effectively. They needed a solution that was transparent to both users and administrators with automated recovery following an outage and the ability to monitor and administer all servers from a single location.

Juniper relied on Subversion LAN Clustering at each site with all three teams relying on a central Subversion server. They evaluated Svnsync and other open source solutions, but couldn’t find anything that would meet their requirements.

SOLUTION

Juniper implemented Subversion WAN Clustering (MultiSite) with Subversion LAN Clustering at each site. This delivers LAN-speed reads and writes at every location with all servers continuously in sync so that users at every site have access to the latest changes regardless of where they originated.

When a server is taken offline, users automatically and transparently failover to another server and keep on working. As soon as the server comes back online it resynchronizes automatically without administrators having to do anything.

When an entire site is taken offline, users transparently failover to Subversion servers at another location and continue working. When the site comes back online, its servers resynchronize automatically with Subversion servers at other locations and the users are switched back. The solution is transparent to users and administrators.

RESULTS
  • Remote users have the same LAN-speed performance and read/write access as users at headquarters in Sunnyvale
  • 24-by-7 operation achieved with no downtime, not even for maintenance
  • Subversion servers stay continuously in sync so that users at every location access the latest changes
  • Continuous hot backup is provided with automated failover and recovery
  • All servers can be monitored and administered from one location
  • Deployed to all servers worldwide within a couple of hours
  • Juniper's results are similar to a recent Forrester Total Economic Impact (TEI) Report which revealed that SVN MultiSite delivered a return on investment (ROI) of 357% with a payback period of fewer than two months. The subject of the study was a Fortune 500 company with annual revenues of over $5 billion that had deployed SVN MultiSite two years earlier. Forrester’s TEI methodology measures costs and cost reduction and weighs the enabling value of a technology in increasing the effectiveness of overall business processes
