Cast your mind back to the mid-Nineties. Even then, climate change was a very real, existential concern. Even then, we were told that major changes would be needed across industry and society alike if we were to stop global warming and prevent the melting of the polar ice caps.

At the time, there were calls to eliminate CFCs from aerosols and focus on fixing the hole in the ozone layer. Plastic carrier bags were introduced to reduce our dependency on paper bags and as a result prevent overlogging. And only eccentrics recycled.
